Herman Nel earned extra money at school by odd jobs like making coffee, which he would sell door to door in the early mornings, With this money he was able to buy himself his first toy motor cars, like the Dinky Toy models. In those years there wasn't a lot of money around these so called toys were in fact more of a luxury than toys.
When he went off to school he wrapped them up in cottonwool and packed away in his drawer until the next holidays. There is a big difference between toy cars and original scale model cars. Scale model cars are detailed copies of the original car to fine detail.
