SCALE MODELS

Herman Nel earned extra money at school by odd jobs like making coffee, which he would sell door to door in the early mornings, With this money he was able to buy himself his first toy motor cars, like the Dinky Toy models. In those years there wasn't a lot of money around these so called toys were in fact more of a luxury than toys.

When he went off to school he wrapped them up in cottonwool and packed away in his drawer until the next holidays.

There is a big difference between toy cars and original scale model cars. Scale model cars are detailed copies of the original car to fine detail.
The pattern of display is arranged in a series of different makes.

The Ford display starts with Henry Ford's "Quadrocycle"and the famous Model T. There are racing cars ,Thunderbirds Mustangs, Mercurys, Lincolns, Edsels, right up to the latest models. The Edsel was named after Henry Ford's son Edsel, who had been installed as president of the Ford Motor Company in 1919. This display also includes the reliable ford pickup trucks and tractors.

There is also a display of various world leaders State Vehicles like the blue Lincoln,John F. Kennedy took his last tragic ride in in 1963. You can even see Jackie in her pink suite. This Lincoln was the only blue State vehicle all the others were black. Adolf Hitler's Mercedes State motor car is also dispplayed.

Charles de Gaulle's Citroen Bugatti is also displayed. There are also other French makes like Peugot and Renault.
The well known Italian makes such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Lamborghini and Masaratti are present.

English Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Range Rovers and busses are on view.

The German range includes Porsche, BMWs, and all the different VW models are on display.

A visit to the this model display in the Old Car Haven museum is an experience that takes you through almost from the beginning of the wheel to today. Herman Nel's knowledge of all his models is phenomenal part of the tour and not to be missed.

The first display you see on entering the museum is the John Deere collection.

John Deere first started making ox or mule drawn ploughs, as well as wagons.

The famous John Deere tractor started in 1897 and this collection includes models of the very early first models right up until the present centuary

In 1918, under Deere & Company's third president, William Butterworth, the company purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company in Waterloo, Iowa, and as a result tractors became an important part of the John Deere line.
